BTC 2017: Guatemala delegation
We are happy to present to you the members of the Guatemala Delegation with their project: “Breaking Down Traditional Walls”
School: Justo Rufino Barrios Official Urban School for Girls (Concepción Chiquirichapa, Quetzaltenango, Guatemala)
Project Description: It is a project that changes the school environment. The ideas emerged with the whole class as a result of the discomfort that the girls have felt in the course of their school life from the first grade of primary to the sixth grade. In order to carry out this project, it was necessary to feel the needs and imagine the results and to work on everything that was planned (measuring, cleaning, selling, working, requesting, planting, etc.). Their execution fostered collaboration and teamwork as well as the joy of doing things in a fun way without thinking about gender or age. The impact of the project is strong. An example of this is that girls across the school prefer to receive classes under the roof of this open-air classroom because they feel better there, as it is somewhat different, contrary to what the traditional educational system has as a concept of literate classrooms, with blackboard and posters placed on the walls. For its structure; it is estimated that it will last ten years, so that not only 260 girls who are currently in school this year will benefit from it, but a large children community that will be receiving their knowledge in the following years, until 2027.

BTC 2017: Delegación de Guatemala

Colegio: Escuela Oficial Urbana de Niñas Justo Rufino Barrios (Concepción Chiquirichapa, Quetzaltenango, Guatemala)
Resumen: Es un proyecto que cambia el ambiente escolar. Las ideas surgieron con toda la clase a raíz de la incomodidad que las niñas han sentido en el transcurso de su vida escolar desde el primer grado de primaria hasta sexto. Para su realizar este proyecto hubo que sentir las necesidades e imaginar los resultados y ponerse a trabajar en todo lo que se había planificado (medir, limpiar, vender, trabajar, solicitar, sembrar, etc.). Su ejecución propició la colaboración y el trabajo en equipo al igual que la alegría de hacer las cosas de forma divertida sin pensar en género ni edades. El impacto del proyecto es fuerte, un ejemplo de ello es que las niñas de toda la escuela, prefieren recibir las clases bajo el techo de este aula al aire libre, debido a que allí se sienten mejor, ya que es algo diferente, contrario a lo que el sistema educativo tradicional tiene como concepto de aulas letradas, con pizarrón y carteles puestos en las paredes. Por su estructura; se evalúa que va a durar diez años, por lo que no solo beneficia a las 260 niñas que están actualmente en la escuela este año, sino a una gran comunidad infantil que estará recibiendo sus conocimientos en los siguientes años, hasta el 2027.

BTC 2017: India delegation
We are happy to present to you the members of the India Delegation with their project: “Right to SAFE education”
School: Espalier The Experimental School (Nashik, India)
Project Description: Inhuman treatment given to a school girl in Kopardi village in Maharashtra sparked serious concern on the issue of girls safety. In a society where a lot is being done to educate girls the biggest drawback is that nothing is being done to ensure their safety. According to a survey - In India only 8 girls out of 100 who enroll for Std I complete their education till Std X. This data stimulated class room discussions and a survey was done for a month to assess the situation. We found that girls were being eve teased on the way to their school. After the survey students were deeply affected by the plight of girls in the slums of the City. Their undeterred approach gave rise to-: "Right to SAFE education".

School: Tung Yuen Primary School (Taichung City)
Project Description: What can we do when we see the badly-designed sinks at our school leaking water? We are not helpless! The hallways at our school are always slippery, and we found the root cause behind them is because the sinks on the washstand are leaking! The 5 of us imagined ways to fix the problem. We redesigned how the water would flow out of the sinks using plastic bottles, and make the hallway dry and safe again. After this challenge, we realized that we are the little change makers that can make big changes at school!
